Why Posture Begins with Perception

For as long as i can remember “The psoas” muscle has acquired an almost mythical status in the worlds of yoga, movement and somatic practice. It has been called the "muscle of the soul," described as a storehouse for trauma, and presented as the key to unlocking emotional release. While there is a release when we consciously and actively work with it in asana, I also look what what has been supported by science as well, especially when we are looking at the intersection of movement, anatomy and neuroscience.

The psoas is a deeply integrated postural muscle that sits at the crossroads of locomotion, spinal stability, breathing and movement. Because of these roles, it is continuously influenced by the way the nervous system organises the body in response to the world around us.

To understand the psoas, we must first move beyond the idea that posture is simply about bones and muscles.  For many years, posture was understood primarily through the lens of biomechanics. If the pelvis tilted forward, the psoas was assumed to be short. If the shoulders rounded, the chest was thought to be tight. The solution, naturally, was to correct the alignment by strengthening one muscle and stretching another.

Today, neuroscience presents a far more dynamic picture.

 

Adaptation Strategies

Posture emerges from the continuous interaction between multiple systems: sensory information arriving from our eyes, vestibular system and joints; proprioceptive feedback from muscles and fascia; breathing; motor control; and the autonomic nervous system. Rather than holding us in a fixed position, the brain is constantly making predictions about how much muscular activity is required to keep us balanced, efficient and safe.

In other words, posture is not a static arrangement of the skeleton. It is a living process of adaptation.

 

One of the most fascinating developments in movement science is the recognition that posture is also influenced by our emotional state. Researchers now describe posture as an emotionally modulated motor behaviour, meaning that the way we organise ourselves against gravity changes according to how safe or threatened we perceive our environment to be.

This does not mean that emotions directly "cause" posture, but rather that the brain regions responsible for evaluating safety are closely connected with those that regulate movement. The limbic system, particularly the amygdala, communicates with centres involved in autonomic regulation and motor control long before conscious thought has caught up. The body is therefore responding not only to physical instability, but also to perceived instability.

 

 

 

Imagine standing close to the edge of a cliff or walking across a narrow bridge. Even if you remain perfectly still, your body begins to organise itself differently. Researchers have repeatedly observed that situations involving postural threat lead to increased co-contraction of postural muscles, greater body stiffness, reduced postural sway and altered balance strategies. From the outside, this may appear as improved stability, yet it comes at a cost. The nervous system sacrifices movement efficiency in favour of perceived safety. This is an elegant survival strategy. By reducing movement variability and increasing muscular activity, the body creates a more predictable system in moments of uncertainty.

 

The important question, however, is what happens when the nervous system continues to organise the body in this way long after the threat has passed?

 

Many of us living with chronic stress begin to move as though they are continually preparing for something. The shoulders remain slightly elevated, the lower back feels persistently rigid, the rib cage loses some of its natural mobility, and movement through the trunk becomes more guarded. Rather than flowing effortlessly from one position to another, the body appears to hold itself together through muscular effort. Yoga asana practices focused on flow and breath can “dissolve” this rigidity overtime and to be honest i believe this is one of the reasons a 90 minute vinyasa class makes you feel so light and grounded at the same time.

Rather than seeing these changes as signs that something has gone wrong, we might view them as the body's best attempt to create stability. The nervous system is constantly asking, What do I need to do to keep this person safe? The posture that emerges is often the answer to that question.

 

How is the psoas part of the conversation?

Unlike many muscles, the psoas connects directly to the lumbar vertebrae before descending to the inner thigh. It contributes not only to hip flexion but also to spinal stability, walking, standing balance and the subtle organisation of movement between the trunk and legs. It also shares intimate anatomical and functional relationships with the diaphragm, pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles.

Because the psoas plays such an important postural role, it is constantly responding to changes in how the nervous system organises stability.

If the brain perceives greater uncertainty, it often increases muscular co-contraction throughout the trunk. The psoas may become one of several muscles contributing to this strategy, alongside the multifidus, diaphragm and abdominal wall. In this context, what many people experience as a "tight psoas" may not reflect a muscle that has shortened, but a muscle that has been recruited more consistently as part of an intelligent protective response.

This distinction is significant. A muscle that is structurally shortened requires a different approach from a muscle whose activity is being regulated by the nervous system. Stretching alone may provide temporary relief, yet if the nervous system continues to perceive a need for increased stability, the underlying pattern is likely to return.

For yoga practitioners, this invites a different relationship with the body. Rather than asking how to release the psoas, we might instead ask what conditions allow the nervous system to reduce its need for protection. How does breathing influence the organisation of the trunk? What happens when movement becomes slower, less goal-oriented and more exploratory? How does balance change when attention softens instead of striving for perfect alignment?

These questions move us away from the idea of correcting posture and towards understanding posture as an ongoing conversation between perception, movement and the environment.

In many ways, this perspective echoes one of yoga's oldest teachings. Patañjali describes āsana as sthira sukham—a quality of steadiness and ease existing together. Modern neuroscience appears to suggest something remarkably similar. Healthy posture is not rigid, perfectly aligned or immovable. It is adaptable. It is capable of becoming more stable when the situation demands it and more fluid when safety allows.

The psoas, then, is one participant in a remarkably intelligent system that is continually adjusting to our experience of the world. When we begin to understand the psoas in this wider context, it becomes less interesting as an isolated muscle and far more fascinating as part of the body's ongoing dialogue between movement, perception and adaptation.

The question is no longer whether your psoas is tight? The question is: what is your nervous system bracing you for?
